EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PROTECTED AREAS IN PRESERVING BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOTS

Protected areas (PAs) are essential for conserving biodiversity and mitigating the adverse effects of
habitat loss and fragmentation. This study evaluates the effectiveness of PAs in preserving
biodiversity hotspots, regions characterized by high levels of endemic species and significant habitat
loss. Using a combination of remote sensing data, biodiversity indices, and field surveys, we assess
changes in species richness, population trends, and habitat integrity within and around selected PAs
over the past two decades. Our findings indicate that PAs have varying degrees of success in
maintaining biodiversity. Factors influencing effectiveness include the size and connectivity of the
PA, management practices, levels of enforcement, and surrounding land use changes. In well-
managed and adequately funded PAs, there is a noticeable positive impact on species conservation,
with stable or increasing populations of key indicator species. However, in many PAs, especially
those in developing regions, challenges such as inadequate funding, poaching, and encroachment
significantly undermine conservation efforts. The study also highlights the importance of community
involvement and sustainable development practices in buffer zones to enhance PA effectiveness.
Integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation strategies has shown to
bolster local support for PAs, resulting in improved biodiversity outcomes. While PAs are crucial for
biodiversity conservation, their effectiveness is contingent upon various socio-economic, ecological,
and management factors. Strengthening the governance and funding of PAs, enhancing connectivity
between PAs, and fostering community engagement are pivotal steps toward ensuring that PAs fulfill
their role in preserving biodiversity hotspots.
