Artificial Intelligence (AI) is proving to be a game-changer in the world of pharmaceutical sciences,
influencing multiple phases of drug discovery and development, and even clinical trials. The
traditional drug development process is typically characterized by costly, time-intensive and
unsuccessful clinical trials. The use of AI technologies, such as machine learning, deep learning,
natural language processing, and generative AI, has revolutionized pharmaceutical research by
facilitating quick and accurate analysis of complex and large biological data. The integration of
genomic, proteomic, and biomarker data and the ability to identify and validate targets with AI can
help discover novel therapeutic targets. AI plays a significant role in the field of drug design and
optimization, aiding in the optimization and identification of novel drug candidates through virtual
screening, quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) modeling, molecular docking, and de
novo molecular design. Moreover, AI can improve the study of the pharmacology of drugs by
predicting the interactions between drugs and targets, assessing the pharmacokinetics of drugs,
predicting toxicity and drug repurposing. AI also plays a role in formulation development,
nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems, controlled release of drugs, and Quality by Design
(QbD) optimization in pharmaceutics. AI is also vital in the clinical development process, enhancing
patient recruitment, design, predictive analysis, and even the generation of real-world evidence. While
this has many great benefits, data quality, algorithmic bias, understanding why the algorithms work,
regulatory compliance and ethical issues are challenges. The future holds promise for more
groundbreaking applications of AI in healthcare, such as explainable AI, precision medicine, digital
twins, and autonomous drug discovery platforms. In conclusion, AI can revolutionize the field of
modern pharmaceutical sciences by fostering innovation, streamlining drug development, and
enabling personalized healthcare.
