Gandhi's Pen As A Tool: An Analysis Of His Journalism, Influence, And Role In The Indian Independence Movement

Abstract

Apart from being recognized as a political icon and spiritual mentor, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
was also an important journalist or author during the period of Indian freedom struggle. This paper
provides an overview of Gandhi's career as a journalist, discussing his editorial principles, literary
techniques, and the themes that were central to his publications. Various factors such as circulation
patterns, target audience selection, or distribution methods affect the circulation of his newspapers
like Indian Opinion. The impact of Gandhi's journalism on the Indian public and its influence on views,
movements, and common sense is also explored. Case studies, illustrations and statistical evidence
are employed to argue that Gandhi’s role as a journalist was instrumental in the independence
movement, reinforced Satyagraha among others, and ended British colonialism in India. Public
perception and mass mobilization are the main focus of Young India / Harijan / media coverage.
